TLS, three pages, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, October 9, 1944. Letter to J. M. Patterson of the New York Daily News regarding statements printed in the Presidential Battle Page. In part, 'Don't you think such a statement as that appearing in the Democratic column of your 'Presidential Battle Page' is very unfair (not to say libelous)? I have no publicity agents. I am taking no part in the campaign where I could reply to it. The Republican committee has other fish to fry, and, therefore, I am helpless to give it answer. I am wondering if you would not, with the facts before you, correct it in your editorial column. The statement is an outrageous example of lying and smearing when it says: 'For the Government to prevent hunger, said Mr. Hoover, would destroy American initiative.' And the other implications are certainly far from the facts.' Hoover then goes on to state his case and again asks for a correction. Accompanied by an unsigned copy of Patterson's interesting reply. In fine condition, with two punch holes to each page, a couple notations and some light creasing. RRAuction COA.
