Fabulous autograph book chock full of wonderful treasures of early Americans. Three hundred plus pages of drawings, letters, signatures, pictures, newspaper clippings and more. This book includes a letter from Robert E. Lee dated Jan. 9, 1869, "My dear Sir . . . If you arrive in Lexington I shall be very glad to see you at my residence . . . if convenient for you to call..." Also in this wonderful journal of sorts is a manuscript poem by John Quincy Adams, "The Rose and Thorn" "Miranda's bosom to adorn/As late a child of spring I chose/ Deep in my finger pierced the thorn/ And sprinkled with my blood the rose/And oh may such forever be/Miranda's .... compared with mine/Be all the thorns of life for me/So all its roses may be thine/" Signed "John Quincy Adams, old May Day 1836." Tucked inside these pages is also a John Marshall letter written while he was Chief Justice. The letter dated, Feb. 16, 1835 reads, "I have received your note and have laid it before the judges. The printing of the court is committed entirely to W. Canole, our Clerk and we do not interfere or control him. I am very respectfully your chief, J Marshall." Andrew Jackson signed and dated a page, July 2, 1836 in Washington. Also a letter from Henry Clay dated June 7, 1836. "I comply with great pleasure to your request in .... my name in your album . . . Henry Clay." There are hundreds more signatures. The owner of this book took time to make an index and have it bound in soft dark green leather covered boards with marbled end papers and gilt on the spine and cover. It comes in a wonderful green fabric covered presentation case and shell decorated with dark green leather and gilt. In overall very good condition, with assorted attached clippings, soiling to some pages, and other wear fitting with an obviously well-attended collection!
