Description

Benedict Arnold

Revolutionary War general and traitor who schemed to betray West Point to the British. ALS, one page, 7.25 x 4.75, August 30, 1787. Arnold requests a credit from Jason Hoyt. In full: 'St. John, Aug. 30, 1787. Sir, Pay Dr. John Prince Five pounds Sixteen Shillings [?] and charge to acct. of Sir, your hbl svt, B. Arnold. Mr. Jas. Hoyt.' In very good condition, with minor paper loss to one corner, a light stain to the signature area and tearing to the edges and folds which has been professionally repaired on the back and which does not affect any of the writing. Accompanied by an engraved portrait. After the discovery of his treason, Benedict fled to Britain hoping to recover his social and financial standing. However, he was snubbed by British society and continued to sink deeper and deeper into debt. He died in 1801, ostracized and in penury. COA John Reznikoff/University Archives and RRAuction COA.
