Commander in Chief of the Navy, 1937, although not a devoted Nazi. Made Grand Admiral in 1939, and served until military differences forced Hitler to retire him in 1943. Convicted at Nuremberg and sentenced to life imprisonment, released in 1955 due to poor health and died in 1960.
