German soldier and politician; he served as vice chancellor of Germany under Hitler and was later acquitted of major war crimes. Souvenir typescript, one page, 8.5 x 11. Text of a statement originally made in Berlin on February 21, 1933. In part, 'A democracy needs people of intellect and character to conduct its affairs to the best advantage. we want to build a new and better Germany on the ruins of the party state.' At the bottom, von Papen writes, 'When I wrote this, I had an idea that an Assembly of the states had to be formed, in order to replace the disorder of Weimar's 32 political parties.
