“I wish to think of it as a visit with Boston friends, old and new, rather than as a matter of business.”

Scottish-born scientist and educator who invented the telephone, founded the Bell Telephone Company, and invented various aids for teaching the deaf. TLS, one page, 8.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, March 22, 1916. Letter to Addison Winship of the Boston City Club declining payment for a recent visit to Boston. In part, 'I wish to think of it as a visit with Boston friends, old and new, rather than as a matter of business. It is exceedingly kind of the club to suggest reimbursement but of course I prefer to consider it a personal expense.'
