Description

Original Joyce Kilmer handwritten poem

Original handwritten poem, entitled Good Friday, on an off-white 8.5 x 11 sheet. Poem consists of fourteen two line stanzas and reads, in part, 'I had no wish to think that night, Of a dead Jew hanging stiff and white. I wanted flesh that was soft and hot, And lust in a breast where love was not. My heart was steeped in bitter brine, My heart was screaming aloud for wine.' Signed at the bottom, 'Joyce Kilmer.' In fine condition, with light overall toning to page, a few minor corner creases and edge dings and a horizontal fold. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from Kilmer's granddaughter, Miriam A. Kilmer. COA John Reznikoff/University Archives and RRAuction COA.
