Description

The first minister of the French Republic to hold that post in the United States, Genet plotted against Spain while outfitting privateers in US ports to prey on British commerce. Washington demanded his recall after Genet criticized the president's stance on neutrality, but the Frenchman later returned to America, where he married the daughter of New York governor Clinton and settled down to a peaceful life as a gentleman farmer. DS, one page, 8 x 7.25, May 26, 1829. Document written in Genet's hand, with his signature 'E. C. Genet,' appearing twice in the text. Document pertains to work being done on a ditch for the Mill Creek, with Genet agreeing to pay the laborers 'with beef, cold victuals and half a pint of whiskey pr. day for each man.' In fine condition, with scattered light toning and expected folds. RRAuction COA.
