He served in the Parliamentary army during the Civil War and in 1654 was elected to House of Commons. In 1658 Oliver Cromwell announced that he wanted Richard Cromwell to replace him as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth. The English army was unhappy with this decision. When members of the House of Commons complained about Richard Cromwell he closed it down. ALS signed 'R. C.,' one page, 6 x 7.75, April 4, 1700. Letter to his daughter. In part, 'That is the noise in my head, nothing hether to make any alteration. I took a shower and 2 pills with a draft of sage tea, 3 pills in the morning and 3 at night.'
