A historical letter of great significance for opera lovers, regarding the first performances of Puccini's 'Madame Butterfly' in London and New York. Written by the turn-of-the century English impresario, George Edwardes, to his New York collaborators. Edwardes is remembered as the inventor and developer of modern musical comedy and as one-time manager of the Savoy Theatre on the Strand. Edwardes relates how Madame Butterfly had recently created a sensation in London, with the Queen attending three successive performances and how he had then met with Ricordi, the publisher who controlled Puccini's operas. Edwardes goes on to propose to his New York agents the basis on which Madame Butterfly and La Boheme could be brought to the United States, discussing the merits of current stars Alice Nielsen, Nellie Melba and others.
