Vice president of the US under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson; he was later a champion of slavery and the Southern cause in Senate debates. ALS signed 'J. C. Calhoun,' one page, 8 x 8.5, no date. Letter of recommendation to the Secretary of the Navy. In full, 'The enclosed will give you the age of Martin Lopes, who is an applicant for a midshipman's warrant.' In fine condition, with a few stray ink marks to end of signature, expected folds, light toning and mounting remnant to reverse of right edge. RRAuction COA.
