Description

Secretary of state under Lincoln, famed for his initially-derided deal to purchase Alaska from Russia. ALS signed 'W. H. Seward,' one page, 8 x 10, March 27, 1829. Letter to an unidentified gentleman, concerning an upcoming publication. In part, 'Owing to the scattered location of the correspondents it has been a more difficult task to collect the letters than has been anticipated. Under present circumstances it is doubtful whether the letters will be prepared for publication before the middle of next summer. The members of the Adelphia Society have a claim upon me for something which may justify the great interest which they showed in the fate of my friend before they leave college - If it should seem to them desirable I will forward to them my address.' Heavy mailing folds, light toning, several small edge tears and a piece of document tape across top edge on reverse, otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
