Description

Politician who opposed fugitive slave laws and urged emancipation of the slaves. Toward the end of his life, Stevens held more political power than any other man in the US, including President Andrew Johnson. ALS, one page, 8 x 10, September 16, 1849. Letter to a gentleman concerning a legal matter. In part, 'Mr. Franklin says he will be ready to argue the Gilford W, Boyd case on Thursday morning...We have only proved the quality of ore taken since 1845 ranging from 3100 to 4300 tons; we could not prove the quality...before the change in the blast.' In fine condition, with light mailing folds through signature and a couple minor brushes to text. RRAuction COA.
