Free franked envelope, 5.5 x 3.5, addressed in Jefferson's hand to 'John Page, Rosewell, near Gloucester court house.' Franked in the upper left corner, 'Free Th: Jefferson.' John Page was a life long friend of Jefferson's and was at the time of the Revolution the richest man in America. He donated the lead from the leaded glass windows in his mansion to be used for bullets for the Revolution. Nicely double suede matted and framed with an oval portrait of Jefferson and a small biographical plaque to an overall size of 13.5 x 20. In very good condition, with a couple postal stamps, pencil notation of a 1798 date, tear working down from top edge, light water stain over portion of address and some light wrinkling and soiling.
