Cherokee chief who helped draft the Cherokee constitution of 1827, led his people to Oklahoma during the removal, and united the Eastern and Western Cherokee nation. DS, signed 'Jn. Ross,' one page, 8 x 6, November 13, 1856. Document signed as Chief of the Cherokee Nation, to Lewis Ross, Treasurer of the Cherokees. In part: "Pay to the order of I. C. Cunningham the sum of three hundred sixteen dollars... out of the School fund for balance due him as settlement as Steward of the Male Seminary.'
