Description

"I have been invited to conduct in the Philharmonic Society...I shall bring you or send you the music for Strindbergs 'Serancherib'."

Finnish composer best known for his work Finlandia, which expressed his country's growing nationalist feeling. ALS, two pages both sides, 5.5 x 9, February 17, 1989. Letter to publisher Robert Lienau. In full, ' I have really been very ill. A month in bed! I have been invited to conduct in the Philharmonic Society there. I have to bring my own notes. Glazounoff told me that. Then I expect I must buy the material to do so, then please take Herr Sahla! I shall bring or send you the music for Strindberg's 'Serancherib'. I am just writing the score. May I now be so impolite and ask you for the installment. Of course you know that I have not given the items agreed. But various circumstances affected that. But now I am off again. For that reason I have no time in April. I have also cancelled concerts in Warsaw, Rome, etc. I shall probably pass through Berlin on Sunday 22nd. It would be good if I could have the installment then so that I could send the money home. With best wishes, yours, Jean Sibelius. PTO! I intend to return to Berlin from London. Then we can discuss everything. Thanks. Excuse the haste!". In fine condition, with punch hole to top of each page. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from University Archives' John Reznikoff.
