Description

Seven autographs of Confederate officers, including an ALS by Major General Charles W. Field and six clipped signatures of other senior officers. The clipped signatures of George C. Cabell (Col. 18th VA, CSA, later MOC); Charles E. Hooker (Col. CSA Cavalry, Mississippi Atty. Genl., MOC); Thomas H. Herndon (Colonel 36th Alabama Reg. MOC); John W. Caldwell (Col. 9th KY, POW, MOC); Henry L. Muldrow (Lt. Col. 11th MS Cavalry, MOC); Roger Quarles (Col. 10th Texas Inf., MOC). The ALS by Charles W. Field is one page, 7.5 x 9.5, August 15, 1889, to Civil War General Charles H. Tompkins, in full: “Your saying you have written Vincent in my behalf is just recd. with sincere thanks. But I fear that he has little if anything to dispose of. I think the letter opening is through Holabird or Hanna, but you did not write them did you? Kellener is so irksome to me that I am chafing and fretting all the while, and am just getting very blue, and yearn for something to turn up soon.” In very good to fine condition, with creasing and toning to the Field letter.

Field commanded CSA Infantry and Cavalry, surrendering with Lee at Appomattox Court House. Post War he served in the Egyptian Army, was Doorkeeper of the U.S. House of Reps., and a Civil Engineer. In this letter he taps an old friend from West Point, Union Genl. and MOH recipient Charles H. Tompkins, to use his influence with U.S. Quartermaster General Samuel Holabird or U.S. Senator Mark Hanna for any patronage position. He succeeded, becoming Supt. of Hot Springs Reservation in Arkansas.
