Original World War II-era 19.5 x 27 Ukrainian propaganda poster published in Kharkiv in July 1941, less than three weeks after Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union, depicting a grotesque caricature of Adolf Hitler, his eyes replaced with swastikas and his clawed hands outstretched, choking on a red sword thrust through his mouth by a clenched fist. The lower left bears four lines of verse in Ukrainian: "Кривавий безумець! Давися мечем! Щерби свої зуби, кате! Ми й голову хижу твою відсічем Червоним мечем розплати!" (Bloody madman! Choke on the sword! Chip your teeth, executioner! We will cut off your predatory head with the red sword of retribution!) Printed by the State Publishing House "Мистецтво" (Mystetstvo) for the Union of Soviet Artists of Ukraine, with the lower margin crediting the artist, Kiyanchenko, and editor V. Ovchinnikov, and noting the poster as No. 641, signed for printing on “10/VII—41,” with a print run of 25,000 and a price of 1 karbovanets. Housed in a protective plastic sleeve. In very good condition, with a clear film adhered over the face of the poster (ending short of the left margin), creasing, edgewear (tears and paper loss), and tack holes to corners.
