Description

Group of materials originating from John F. Kennedy's Senate files, all from the collection of noted JFK collector Robert L. White. Includes:

- an official four-page press release from the publicity division of the Democratic National Committee, carrying the remarks of Senator John F. Kennedy to the Greater Houston (Texas) Ministerial Association, September 12, 1960. In part: "While the so-called religious issue is necessarily and properly the chief topic here tonight, I want to emphasize from the outset that we have far more critical issues to face in the 1960 election: the spread of Communist influence, until it now festers 90 miles off the coast of Florida—the humiliating treatment of our President and Vice President by those who no longer respect our power—the hungry children I saw in West Virginia, the old people who cannot pay their doctor bills, the families forced to give up their farms—an America with too many slums, with too few schools, and too late to the moon and outer space. These are the real issues which should decide this campaign. And they are not religious issues—for war and hunger and ignorance and despair know no religious barriers. But because I am a Catholic, and no Catholic has ever been elected, the real issues in this campaign have been obscured—perhaps deliberately, in some quarters less responsible than this."

- a period copy of a telegram sent by John F. Kennedy to several victorious Indiana mayors and mayors-elect on November 4, 1959, in full: "Sincere congratulations. The vote of confidence given you must be personally most gratifying. I wish you every success in resolving the complex problems of municipal government during your administration." Includes a two-page distribution list, naming twelve recipients, including the mayors and mayors-elect of Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, Terre Haute, South Bend, Munsie, and elsewhere.

- six circa 1960 mimeographed clippings from a news service about the book John F. Kennedy: A Political Profile by James MacGregor.

- a handwritten filing note by JFK's secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, for a photo of Kennedy at Boston Garden on the eve of his election.

In overall fine condition. All originate from the Robert L. White collection and are accompanied by certificates of authenticity from Erik L. Dorr.
