Gemini G-4C boot made for Frank Borman by the David Clark Company in 1965, with a parts label to the inner liner: "Left boot, Space Suit / NASA designation GB-4C-22 / Mfg. David Clark Company Inc. / P/N A–1728 Serial No. 422/ Size: Borman, August 1965." The boot features a white reflective Nomex-coated nylon outer Thermal Micrometeorite Garment (TMG) layer with a Velcro-lined tongue and hard fiberglass sole; beneath this, an inner nylon restraint layer secures with a zipper and webbing straps, with laces zigzagging to either side of the inner tongue before the outer TMG layer is fastened over the top with Velcro. In fine condition, with expected signs of wear. An extremely scarce and desirable combat-style space boot from the important Gemini suit, identical in pattern to the boot worn by astronaut Ed White during America's first spacewalk on Gemini 4.
Developed by the David Clark Company of Worcester, Massachusetts, the G-4C became the standard Gemini pressure suit for extravehicular activity, incorporating a link-net restraint system designed to improve mobility while pressurized. Its boots featured the same basic layered construction seen here, with a protective outer covering over an inner restraint section secured by zipper, webbing, and laces; Ed White wore G-4C boots of this pattern during Gemini 4, when he became the first American to walk in space. This example was manufactured and sized specifically for Frank Borman in August 1965. Borman and Jim Lovell ultimately trained and flew their 14-day Gemini 7 endurance mission wearing the lighter G-5C suits rather than the G-4C. Although an EVA was discussed during planning for the joint Gemini 7/Gemini 6A mission, Borman opposed adding a spacewalk that might interfere with Gemini 7’s primary endurance objectives.
