Archive of 10 pieces documenting John M. Browning's 1909 patent application for his "Safety Device for Firearms," the invention patented as U.S. Patent No. 947,478 on January 25, 1910. The archive is centered on an official twelve-page Patent Office specification, dated June 2, 1909, describing the invention in detail and bearing a secretarial signature signed on Browning's behalf. Also included are several official Patent Office communications tracing the application's progress, including: a June 21, 1909 acknowledgment of receipt of the petition, specification, oath, and drawings for Serial No. 503,481; a July 28, 1909 notice advising that the application had been examined and allowed; a December 29, 1909 receipt acknowledging payment of the $20 final patent fee; and additional Patent Office correspondence relating to the prosecution of the application.
