Original glossy 3.25 x 5.25 deckle-edge photograph of Al Capone standing with an arm over his younger brother, Albert Capone, on the grounds of Capone's Palm Island estate in Miami Beach, Florida. The photo bears the period caption "Miami Beach, Fla. July 1940" in the lower border, with the reverse retaining a photo finisher's certification stamp dated July 29, 1940. In fine condition. Originates from the personal photo album of Dorothy Pucci Capone, who was married to Albert Capone for a number of years.
Following his release from Alcatraz in November 1939, Al Capone returned to his Palm Island estate in Miami Beach, where declining health from neurosyphilis and paresis largely ended his involvement in organized crime. By the summer of 1940, he spent much of his time with family, including his younger brother. Albert 'Bites' Capone (1905–1980), born Umberto Capone, was the low-profile younger brother of gangster Al Capone. Although he occasionally drew the attention of law enforcement because of his family connections, he largely avoided his brother's criminal notoriety and legally changed his surname to Rayola in 1942 to distance himself from it. He spent his later years living quietly in the Chicago suburbs, a marked contrast to his infamous sibling.
