Description

Original vintage glossy 6.5 x 4.75 standing police identification photograph depicting four prominent Capone Gang members following their November 2, 1932, arrest, identified on the reverse as (left to right) Frank Rio, Michael Costello, Philip D'Andrea, and Paul Ricca. Typed notations on the reverse record each man's name, height, police identification number, and the date "11-2-32," with departmental attribution to Lieutenant McGinnis of the Detective Bureau. In very good to fine condition, with some crazing and surface marks.

Taken just months after Al Capone entered federal prison in May 1932, this photograph captures a pivotal moment in the Chicago Outfit's evolution. According to historian John J. Binder in Al Capone's Beer Wars, Frank Rio, Capone's longtime bodyguard and trusted lieutenant, almost certainly succeeded Capone as head of the organization following his imprisonment and remained in charge when this photograph was taken, before Frank Nitti assumed leadership later that year.

Also pictured is Paul Ricca, who by 1935 had become the Outfit's underboss and would ultimately emerge as one of the most powerful Mafia leaders in American history. Philip D'Andrea, another longtime Capone associate, had gained national attention the previous year after being arrested for carrying a concealed weapon into Capone's 1931 tax-evasion trial. Representing four influential members of the Capone organization during one of its most consequential leadership transitions, this is a noteworthy Chicago Mob police identification photograph.
