Collection of 19 original Cleveland Police Department glossy diptych mug shots, each approximately 4.5 x 2.75, depicting participants arrested during the infamous Hotel Statler conference raid of December 5, 1928, with typed Cleveland Police Department booking records affixed to the reverse identifying each subject and recording personal information. Represented are some of the most significant figures in early American organized crime, including future Gambino crime family boss Vincent Mangano, future Profaci (later Colombo) crime family boss Giuseppe Magliocco, Chicago Outfit leader and head of the Unione Siciliana Pasqualino ‘Patsy’ Lolordo, Chicago Outfit leader Joe Guinta, Chicago mobster Joseph Scacco, and Buffalo crime figure Sam DeCarlo. Others include Paul Palazzolo, Phil Bacino (Tony Bello), John Mirabella, Charles Sanfilippo, Frank Alo, Mike Russo, Joseph Vaglica, Joseph Palermo (Palesmo), Andrew Lombardino, Salvatore Lombardino, James Intrava, Emanuel Cammerato, and Sam Olivero. In overall fine condition, with some light creases, and small impressions from typing on the reverse.
In December 1928, law enforcement disrupted what is widely regarded as the first national gathering of Sicilian-American organized crime leaders at Cleveland's Hotel Statler. Convened to strengthen relationships among criminal organizations operating in cities across the United States, the meeting foreshadowed the national cooperation that would ultimately culminate in the formation of the Mafia Commission in 1931 following the Castellammarese War. Acting on a tip, Cleveland police raided the Hotel Statler and arrested twenty-three attendees, creating this remarkable series of police booking photographs.
