Depression-era bank robber (1903-1970) and longtime associate of Harry Pierpont and John Dillinger. A member of the Dillinger Gang following the September 1933 Michigan City prison escape, Clark participated in numerous robberies before his capture in Tucson, Arizona, in January 1934. The identification of this mug shot is corroborated by the Indiana Archives and Records Administration's Dillinger Collection, which lists Russell Clark as Indiana State Prison inmate no. 12261, the same prisoner number visible in the photograph. Clark received this number upon his incarceration at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, where he joined Harry Pierpont, John ‘Red’ Hamilton, Charles Makley, and other future members of the Dillinger Gang. On September 26, 1933, Clark escaped along with nine other inmates using firearms that John Dillinger – free on parole at the time – had smuggled into the prison. He subsequently participated in the gang's string of bank robberies before being captured with Pierpont and Makley in Tucson, Arizona, in January 1934. Convicted for his role in the murder of Sheriff Jess Sarber during the Lima, Ohio, jailbreak, Clark received a life sentence, remaining imprisoned until his parole in 1968.
