Prohibition-era gangster, bank robber, and convicted murderer (1902-1934) who served as the leader and principal strategist of the notorious Dillinger Gang. A close friend and mentor to John Dillinger, Pierpont was regarded as an intelligent, soft-spoken natural leader whose fierce loyalty earned the respect of his fellow outlaws. Preferring to avoid publicity, he allowed Dillinger to become the gang's public face while directing many of its criminal operations. The identification of this mug shot is corroborated by the Indiana Archives and Records Administration's Dillinger Collection, which lists Harry Pierpont as Indiana State Prison inmate no. 11014, the same prisoner number visible in the photograph. Pierpont received this number upon his incarceration at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, where he later befriended John Dillinger and became the principal architect of the gang that would bear Dillinger's name. On September 26, 1933, Pierpont escaped along with nine other inmates using firearms that Dillinger – free on parole at the time – had smuggled into the prison. He subsequently led the gang through a series of robberies and was instrumental in the October 1933 jailbreak that freed Dillinger from the Allen County Jail in Lima, Ohio, during which Sheriff Jess Sarber was fatally shot. Captured in Tucson, Arizona, in January 1934, Pierpont was convicted of Sarber's murder and executed in Ohio's electric chair on October 17, 1934.
