Description

Canadian-born bank robber (1898-1934) and one of John Dillinger's closest associates during the gang's notorious crime spree of 1933–1934. Original sepia-tone glossy 4.5 x 3 Indiana State Prison mugshot photograph of John ‘Red’ Hamilton, showing profile and frontal views, identified by prisoner number "11963." In very good condition, with paper loss to the upper right edge, and a tear to the bottom edge.

The identification of this mug shot is corroborated by the Indiana Archives and Records Administration's Dillinger Collection, which lists John Hamilton as Indiana State Prison inmate no. 11963, the same prisoner number visible in the photograph. Hamilton received this number upon his incarceration at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, where he met John Dillinger and several other future members of the notorious Dillinger Gang. On September 26, 1933, Hamilton escaped along with nine other inmates using guns Dillinger, by then free on parole, had smuggled inside. Hamilton went on to become one of Dillinger's closest associates, participating in a string of violent bank robberies before being mortally wounded in a shootout with police in Hastings, Minnesota, on April 23, 1934, and dying three days later.
