Autograph musical manuscript sketch leaf by Antonín Dvořák for his Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88, unsigned, one page both sides, 9.5 x 2.5, no date but circa 1889. The fragment, cut from a larger leaf of rastrum-ruled music manuscript paper, features 23 measures in total in short score—12 measures on the recto and 11 on the verso. The working manuscript contains thematic material from the first movement of the symphony, with corrections and deletions that reveal Dvořák’s active compositional process. In fine condition. Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony was composed in 1889 and first performed in Prague on February 2, 1890, by the National Theatre Orchestra under the composer’s baton. One of his most beloved orchestral works, the symphony marked a fresh and highly individual turn in his writing, combining radiant pastoral color, folk-inflected melody, fanfare-like gestures, rhythmic vitality, and a freer, more rhapsodic treatment of symphonic form. The first movement, from which this sketch derives, is especially admired for its lyrical abundance and its vivid evocation of nature, qualities that distinguish the Eighth from the more dramatic and tightly argued Seventh Symphony.
