Designed by Apple as a compact, transportable computer, the IIc integrated features that previously required expansion cards, including built-in dual 5.25-inch floppy drive support, serial and printer ports, and an enhanced keyboard, into a streamlined all-in-one unit. Bundled with Apple's monochrome monitor, AppleWorks productivity suite, and ProDOS operating system, it provided consumers with a complete computing platform suitable for home, education, and business use.
Released in April 1984, the Apple IIc was Apple Computer's first compact, transportable computer: a fully integrated Apple II system housed in a streamlined enclosure, with the ‘c’ standing for ‘compact.’ To complement its portable design, Apple introduced the Apple IIc Flat Panel Display, the company's first LCD monitor, which reached the market in early 1985. Featuring an 80 x 24 monochrome display capable of double hi-resolution graphics, the display ultimately proved commercially unsuccessful due to its distorted aspect ratio, limited contrast, and steep $595 retail price. Approximately 10,000 units were produced before it was discontinued.
