Description

Collection of correspondence to Joseph P. Kennedy and his niece and devoted caretaker, Ann Gargan, including various letters, telegrams, and photographs. Highlights include:

- TLS by Bing Crosby, signed "Bing," two pages, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, March 51, 1965, to Joseph P. Kennedy, in part: "Chris sent me a letter from Ann Gargan, discussing the clipping which he sent you, about the possibility of our having French caddies come over to the Pebble Beach golf tournament—girl caddies, that is. This is more or less a gag, Joe, as we were trying to take a punch at Hope for bringing over the Japanese girls for the Palm Springs competition. However, it's not too far from the realm of possibility. We might just do it—although those frail fillies from the South of France might find the rigorous climate at Pebble Beach a little severe."

- TLS by Peter Lawford, signed "Peter," one page, 6.5 x 8.5, personal letterhead, April 14, 1965, to Ann Gargan, in part: "Just thought you might like to see the enclosed, which Teddy so kindly asked me to write for his book about your uncle. I am happy to say that he liked it, and am delighted and flattered that it will be included with all the other contributions." Includes a two-page carbon typescript of his contribution and the original mailing envelope.

- a Western Union telegram addressed to "Hon. and Mrs. Joseph P. Kennedy Family" in Hyannis Port, dated June 7, 1968, in part: "You are invited to attend a requiem mass in memory of Robert Francis Kennedy at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City on Saturday, June 8, at 10:00 A.M. Please enter through the Fifth Avenue Entrance by 9:30 A.M. Interment will be at Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, at 5:40 P.M. You are welcome to travel on the funeral train from New York to Washington."

- thirteen TLSs by Richard Cardinal Cushing, totaling 14 pages, all on "Cardinal's Residence" letterhead, dated from 1965 to 1968, all addressed to Ann Gargan. Cardinal Cushing sends greetings and blessings to "Uncle Joe," mentions going "to Rome in two weeks for the fourth session of Vatican Council II," sends thanks for a "princely check for the rebuilding of St. Stephen's," mentions attending a World Series game, discusses various projects, refers to his ailing health, and refers to his preparation of an audio tape recording "of some of my contacts with Jack, with the Ambassador and with Mrs. Rose Kennedy" to contribute to the Kennedy library, noting: "I certainly had plenty to say in memory of Jack, God rest his soul." Includes an original vintage glossy photo of Cushing with Joseph P. Kennedy.

- a six-page typescript of Cardinal Cushing's "Eulogy in Memory of Hon. Joseph P. Kennedy," delivered on November 20, 1969, signed and inscribed at the head in blue ballpoint, "Ann, with all my love and blessings, Richard Cardinal Cushing."

- a folder of photostat materials pertaining to the "Memorial Marker for Mr. Joseph P. Kennedy," along with photostat documents prepared by Rose Kennedy outlining her wishes for Kennedy's funeral. Also includes three original silver gelatin photos of memorial markers built for the Kennedy family plot at Holyhood Cemetery built by F. P. Davis Monumental Works, Inc.

Other items of note include:

- TLS by J. W. Hayes, Jr., two pages, U.S.S. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. letterhead, 8 x 10.5, March 12, 1966, to Joseph P. Kennedy, in part: "As Commanding Officer of the Kennedy I have recently written to Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Edward M. Kennedy advising them of the ships immediate plans of and extending to them an invitation to visit the ship. In Senator Kennedy's reply to my letter, he suggested that you might also enjoy hearing the recent history of the ship." Hayes goes on to give a brief history of its service.

- two original vintage color glossy 7 x 5 photographs of Ann Gargan with Joseph P. Kennedy, taken in 1963 by official White House photographer Cecil W. Stoughton; both carry his credit stamp on the reverse and are stamp-dated August 5, 1963.

- correspondence to Ann Gargan from editors at Good Housekeeping, pertaining to a proposed magazine article; plus an uncorrected typescript of a column written about Gargan for Ladies' Home Journal, plus the magazine as issued (June 1966).

In overall very good to fine condition.

From the estate of Ann Gargan King.
