Description

Jacqueline Kennedy’s 1967 Easter letter to Joseph P. Kennedy, with original childhood drawings by Caroline and John Jr.

ALS signed “Jackie,” one page on a 5.5 x 3.5 postcard featuring a view of Acapulco, Mexico, no date but with an envelope postmarked March 26, 1967. Handwritten letter to her father-in-law, Joseph P. Kennedy, beginning, "Dearest Grandpa," in full: "I am here in Mexico with the children, with Lee & Stas & their children—We went deep sea fishing & Caroline caught an enormous sail fish & John caught a shark!—When the children aren't splashing in the water—they are in their rooms painting you Easter cards. We all send you so much love—Happy Easter."

Includes the two hand-drawn Easter cards referenced: an adorable 12 x 18 drawing by the nine-year old Caroline Kennedy, featuring a portrait of the Easter Bunny, signed and inscribed in colored pencil, "Happy Easter, To Grandpa, Love, Caroline"; and a colorful 18 x 12 drawing by the 6-year-old John F. Kennedy, Jr., featuring a large sun, flowers, and the Easter Bunny with a basket full of Easter eggs, signed and inscribed in crayon, "To Grandpa, Love, John, Happy Easter."

In overall fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds to the drawings. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed by Jacqueline Kennedy to "Hon. Joseph P. Kennedy" in Palm Beach, Florida, and incorporating her name in the return address area: "Mrs. J. F. Kennedy, 1040 5th Ave, New York City, USA."

Written less than four years after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, this intimate family correspondence captures Jacqueline Kennedy and her children during a quieter period of private life, while maintaining their close bond with patriarch Joseph P. Kennedy. Caroline and John Jr.’s handmade Easter cards—specifically mentioned by Jacqueline as they were being created in Acapulco—offer an especially poignant glimpse of the young Kennedy family away from the public spotlight.
