Large fragment of light green glazed ceramic bathroom tile removed from Al Capone's suite at Chicago's Lexington Hotel, approximately 5.5˝ x 4.5˝ x 1˝, retaining substantial original mortar backing from its installation. In fine condition. Accompanied by a group of provenance and reference materials from Capone Tiles, Ltd., including photocopies of excavation and provenance documents, a January 1996 informational packet, a tile-style guide, a publicity photograph of the Lexington Hotel, and contemporary newspaper articles documenting the hotel's demolition and the recovery of the bathroom tiles.
Al Capone occupied Suite 530 of Chicago's Lexington Hotel during the height of Prohibition, using it as both his residence and the headquarters from which he directed his criminal empire. According to the accompanying Capone Tiles, Ltd. documentation, the suite's distinctive light green bathroom tiles, installed during a 1928 remodeling, were excavated in December 1995, just before the long-vacant hotel was demolished.
