Original vintage matte-finish 3.5 x 5.5 photographic postcard depicting law enforcement officers holding up the bodies of brothers Bob Dalton (1869–1892) and Grat Dalton (1861–1892) following the Dalton Gang's failed attempt to rob two banks simultaneously in Coffeyville, Kansas, on October 5, 1892. The lower border bears collector's pencil notations. In fine condition, with light silvering to the darker areas of the image.
The Coffeyville raid marked the dramatic end of the Dalton Gang, one of the last major outlaw bands of the American frontier. The attempted double bank robbery erupted into a deadly gun battle that left Bob Dalton, age 23, Grat Dalton, age 31, and gang members Bill Powers and Dick Broadwell dead in the street. Emmett Dalton survived despite suffering numerous gunshot wounds, was sentenced to life imprisonment, and was pardoned after serving fourteen years. One of the most recognizable images associated with the American Old West, this photograph documents the violent conclusion of the Dalton Gang's brief but notorious career.
