Description

Uncommon first edition book: An Ideal Husband by the Author of Lady Windermere's Fan. First edition, limited issue of 1000. London: Leonard Smithers and Co., 1899. Hardcover bound in lavender cloth with gilt design by Charles Shannon, 6.25 x 8.5, 213 pages. Book condition: VG-/None, with sunning and minor scuffs to boards, edgewear, and bumped corners.

Wilde described An Ideal Husband as containing 'a great deal of the real Oscar,' and its sparkling wit and social satire expose the very hypocrisies that would soon consume his own life. Premiered in January 1895 before an audience that included the Prince of Wales, the play was an immediate success; within four months, however, Wilde had been arrested and disgraced, his name removed from the marquee and likewise omitted from this first edition, published only after the play’s brief original run had closed.
