Description

Honorary Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners' medal set from the Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympics, presented to Organizing Committee Vice-President Javier Gómez-Navarro

Complete set of gold, silver, and bronze winners' medals from the Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympics, presented to Javier Gómez-Navarro, Vice-President of the Barcelona Olympic Organizing Committee (COOB '92), by the designer of the medals, Xavier Corbero. The set contains gilt silver (232 gm), silver (267 gm), and bronze (229 gm), each 70 mm in diameter, manufactured by Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre. The obverses depict a seated Victory rendered in a Modernist style, holding a victor's crown and palm branch above the Olympic rings, with raised text: "XXV Olimpiada Barcelona 1992"; the reverse sides feature the Games logo of a stylized man leaping over the Olympic rings. Unlike winners' medals from other Olympic Games, examples from Barcelona do not indicate the sport or event. The medals are housed in their attractive contoured hardwood display case, 11.25˝ x 4˝ x 1˝, with a lustrous lacquered finish and a gilt Barcelona 1992 Olympic emblem to the lid. The gold and silver medals bear instances of nicks to edges, small scratches, and discoloration. Ribbons are not included.

The 1992 Summer Olympics were the last competition to be staged in the same year as the Winter Olympics, and the first Summer Games since the end of the Cold War. In the wake of the Soviet Union's dissolution in 1991, the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania sent their own teams for the first time since 1936, with the twelve other former Soviet republics competing as the Unified Team, a collective that led the Olympiad with a total of 112 medals.

Javier Gómez-Navarro (1945–2024) was a Spanish politician, businessman, and sports administrator whose career was closely intertwined with the modernization of Spanish sport and tourism. Gómez-Navarro served as Spain's Secretary of State for Sport from 1987 to 1993, during which time he helped reform the nation's sporting infrastructure and worked with the private sector to transform professional sports clubs into limited companies. He also served as Vice-President of the Organizing Committee of the Barcelona 1992 Summer Olympics, playing a key role in the planning and execution of the Games that helped redefine Barcelona's international image and showcased Spain on the world stage. In recognition of his contributions to the Olympic Movement and the success of the Barcelona Games, Gómez-Navarro received the Olympic Order in Gold from the International Olympic Committee in 1992. He later served as Spain's Minister of Trade and Tourism from 1993 to 1996.
