Description

Winner’s medal awarded in the Bavarian curling demonstration event at the Garmisch 1936 Winter Olympics. Gilt silver, 57 mm x 87 mm, 125 gm. The plaque features a large enameled color logo showing Kreuzeck mountain with Olympic the rings surrounded by a silver wreath, with the prize legend engraved below: "Eiswettschiessen der IV. Olympischen Winterspiele, 1936 Garmisch Partenkirchen, National, Damen-Mannschaftskampf, 1 Platz." Reverse bears the maker's mark of Carl Poellath, Schrobenhausen.

Bavarian curling, or ice stock sport [eisstockschießen], appeared at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen as a demonstration sport, with events held on Lake Riessersee. Similar to curling, competitors slid handled 'stocks' across the ice in target, distance, and team competitions, including international men’s events and German national events for men and women. Although it drew spectators and returned as a demonstration sport in 1964, it never became an official Olympic medal event.
