Description

Silvered Stockholm 1912 "Lawn-Tennis" badge—an Olympic rarity, published in 'Official Olympic Participant Badges'

Extremely rare tennis badge from the Stockholm 1912 Olympics. Silvered, 50 mm in diameter, engraved "1912" at center, and encircled: "Olympiska Spelen, Lawn-Tennis." Retains its original pin-and-loop closure on the back. Exhibits substantial wear to the original mirror-finish. This exact badge is pictured in 'Official Olympic Participant Badges,' a comprehensive collector's guide by Hans Elbel and Oleg Vorontsov (pp. 22).

At the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, tennis featured eight events split between two tournaments: indoor covered-court matches on wood from May 5–12 and outdoor clay-court matches from late June to early July. France led the medal table with three golds, while Great Britain performed strongly with six medals overall. Notable champions included André Gobert of France in men’s indoor singles, Edith Hannam of Great Britain in women’s indoor singles, Charles Winslow of South Africa in men’s outdoor singles, and Marguerite Broquedis of France in women’s outdoor singles. The outdoor tournament was affected by a scheduling conflict with Wimbledon, which kept many leading British players away.
