Description

Bronze medal in women's all-around gymnastics, won by a Romanian at the 1984 LA Olympics

Winner’s medal awarded to Romanian gymnast Simona Păucă at the Los Angeles 1984 Summer Olympics. Bronze, 63.5 mm, 116 gm, designed by Dugald Stermer and struck by Jostens, Indianapolis. Inspired by the original design by Giuseppe Cassioli, the front of the medal is inscribed, “XXIII Olympiad, Los Angeles 1984,” and features a ‘Seated Victory’ with the Colosseum in the background, and the reverse portrays a victorious athlete being carried by a jubilant crowd. The edge is inscribed with the name of the event, "Gymnastics, All-Around, Women." Suspended from its original magenta, vermillion, and yellow ribbon and complete with its blue velvet presentation case, which has a broken hinge.

Simona Păucă was one of Romania’s standout gymnasts at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She won gold with Romania in the women’s team competition, tied teammate Ecaterina Szabó for gold on balance beam, and earned bronze in the women’s individual all-around. Her beam title was especially notable because both Romanians finished with the same top score, giving Romania a rare shared Olympic gold in the event.
