Description

I Can Fly and beyond: 21 original Mary Blair production paintings for Little Golden Books

(Simon & Schuster, c. 1950s) Remarkable archive of original concept and production layout paintings by Mary Blair for classic Little Golden Books, highlighted by several for the 1950 classic I Can Fly, authored by Ruth Krauss and illustrated by Mary Blair. Includes eight paintings accomplished in ink and gouache on 10 x 6.5 art board, and thirteen accomplished in ink and gouache on larger art board, most about 9.5 x 13.5. Among the highlights are: the original "I Can Fly" title page layout painting; excellent paintings of whimsical animals—owls, a camel, a bear, a crab, and a mole; a number of fun outdoor scenes; and a series of paintings featuring a little girl with animals, including a mouse, an owl, a bee, a crab, a donkey, and a clam. In overall fine condition.

Mary Blair was a concept artist for Disney during the 1940s and early 1950s, working on designs for such films as Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland. She also created designs for several Disney attractions (including It's a Small World), and her largest work ever, the multi-story mosaic in Disney World's Contemporary Hotel concourse. She also contributed illustrations for several books in Simon & Schuster's celebrated 'Little Golden Books' series of children's books, including I Can Fly, Baby's House, The Up and Down Book, and The Golden Book of Little Verses.
