Eminent Viennese composer (1825–1899) known as the 'Waltz King,' who is remembered for such classics as 'The Beautiful Blue Danube' and the 'Emperor Waltz,' and for the operetta staple, 'Die Fledermaus.' Handwritten musical manuscript in pencil by Johann Strauss, one page both sides, 10.25 x 6.75, no date but circa 1890s. Strauss writes and extensively corrects a preliminary draft of the section preceding the finale of his three-act comic opera Ritter Pázmán. Mounted, matted, and framed with a portrait to an overall size of 23.25 x 13.5; window to frame backing reveals reverse. In very good to fine condition, with smudging to some of the notes.
Based upon a Hungarian folk ballad, Ritter Pázmán premiered at the Vienna Court Opera on January 1, 1892. The work marked Johann Strauss II’s only full-scale opera, an ambitious departure from the waltzes and operettas that had made him famous throughout Europe. Though it met with only limited success on the stage, its brilliant orchestral writing—especially the celebrated 'Eva Waltz'—preserved something of Strauss’s unmistakable melodic charm within the grander framework of Viennese opera.
