Description

Scarce, unsigned book: Lincolniana: In Memoriam, printed by John Wilson and Sons. Limited first edition of 250 copies; believed to be the first published use of the word Lincolniana. Boston, Massachusetts: William V. Spencer, 1865. Brown cloth-bound hardcover with gilt devices to the spine, 7.5 x 9.75, 346. Book condition: G+/None, with losses at the head of the spine, bumped corners, and rippling to cloth.

Published in the immediate aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, Lincolniana: In Memoriam represents one of the earliest attempts to gather and preserve the nation’s collective response to the fallen president. Issued in a very limited edition of just 250 copies, the volume was conceived as a memorial compilation, drawing together sermons, eulogies, speeches, letters, and poetic tributes that had appeared in newspapers and were delivered across the country in the weeks following Lincoln’s death.
