Description

Winner's medal awarded for sailing at the London 1908 Olympics. Bronze, 33.5 mm, 19 gm, designed by Bertram Mackennel; manufactured by Vaughton & Sons, England. The front, inscribed, "Olympic Games, London 1908," features a victorious athlete being crowned with a laurel wreath by two seated females; the reverse depicts St. George, the patron saint of England, slaying a dragon as a goddess looks on. The edge is engraved with the name of the event, "Second Prize, 12 Metre Yacht Race."

The 12 Metre yachting event at the London 1908 Olympics was staged not in London but at Hunter’s Quay, Scotland, under the auspices of the Clyde Corinthian Yacht Club. Held on August 11–12, the competition drew just two boats, both representing Great Britain, with 20 sailors competing over a 26-nautical-mile course from Hunter’s Quay around marks at Inverkip, Dunoon, and Kilcreggan. The winning yacht was Hera, helmed by T. C. Glen-Coats, while second place went to Mouchette, helmed by Charles MacIver. Because only two yachts entered, the contest was an all-British duel, with Hera winning both races and Mouchette finishing second in each. For second place, the helmsman and mate of the Mouchette received silver medals but the eight crewmen received bronze medals.
