Description

"I think that our new version of 'Friend of the Devil is a hit, not only because I helped write it!"

American musician, singer, and songwriter (1945–2009) known as the co-founder and lead vocalist of the New Riders of the Purple Sage. Two ALSs, signed "John Dawson," each one page, 8.5 x 11, circa November 1983. Dawson drafts letters to record labels concerning new music by the New Riders of the Purple Sage. One, in part: "I think that our new version of 'Friend of the Devil is a hit, not only because I helped write it! It and The New Riders are available, and we also have plenty of excellent material for the rest of our L.P." The other, in part: "Here is a sample of what The New Riders sound like these days. I have always thought that Friend of the Devil was a hit, not only because I helped write it. The song has a huge national following and our version (Hunter intended it as a New Rider song, that's how I got in on it) happens, I think, the sound the best that it's ever been recorded! I thought you might want a chance to have both versions on Arista. We also have enough excellent new material *mostly mine) for the rest of an L.P." Also includes an unsigned typed letter carrying similar content, annotated in an unknown hand. In fine condition.

From the personal Grateful Dead collection of Alice Giblin.
