The Sex Pistols' concert at Brunel University in mid-December 1977 proved a chaotic and volatile early date of the band’s ‘Never Mind the Bans’ tour, staged before an overcrowded and unruly audience in the campus Sports Barn. Marked by unrest and the group’s own unease with larger venues, the performance endures as one of the most documented events in Brunel’s music history, capturing the band at a pivotal moment of notoriety and transition.
Per Johnny Rotten, as quoted from John Savage’s book, England's Dreaming, Revised Edition: Anarchy, Sex Pistols, Punk Rock, and Beyond: ‘‘It was a fiasco…We were in that big hall, which was jam-packed, nobody really knew why anybody was there, least of all us. I was very confused by the sheer popularity of it. I thought, ‘This is horrible, it shouldn’t be like this.’ I’d seen us as a small clubby band. We were way ahead of ourselves. We didn’t know how to get past the first twenty rows.’
