By May 1970, Hendrix had fewer than five months to live—he died in London on September 18, 1970—placing the image within the final chapter of his career. The performance took place during a benefit concert organized in support of Timothy Leary following his conviction on marijuana charges, an event that drew notable figures from the counterculture community.
