Description

American graphic artist and illustrator (born 1941) known for his influential album and poster designs from the 1960s onward. His work includes covers for the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour, Jefferson Airplane’s Crown of Creation, the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street, and KISS’s Hotter Than Hell. His first major commission was the 1963 poster for the surf film The Endless Summer, after which he served as Capitol Records’ head of design (1965–1968), creating artwork for artists including the Beatles and the Beach Boys and overseeing psychedelic posters for the Pinnacle Shrine exposition. Collection of 14 limited edition digital prints featuring iconic artwork by graphic artist and illustrator John Van Hamersveld, 8.5 x 11 and 11.5 x 8, each printed on archival Legion Velvet Somerset paper and signed and numbered in pencil in the lower margin by Van Hamersveld. The prints showcase six of his most enduring works, including the poster for the 1966 surf film The Endless Summer; a 1964 image of Van Hamersveld riding a Makaha skateboard; a ticket design for The Who’s June 28–29, 1968, concerts at Los Angeles’s Shrine Auditorium; his ‘Indian’ poster for Jefferson Airplane’s February 23–24, 1968, shows at the Shrine Exposition Hall; a concert poster design for Cream; and artwork for the back cover of the Grateful Dead’s 1974 compilation album Skeletons from the Closet: The Best of Grateful Dead.

Prints are from editions of 2000, with multiple examples present for several titles: Surf California: 40th Anniversary 1964 (177); Skate California: 40th Anniversary 1964 (4: 94, 95, 175, 178); Pinnacle: Who Ticket (2: 177, 178); Pinnacle: Jefferson Airplane – Indian (3: 175, 176, 178); Pinnacle: Cream (2: 177, 178); and Rock: Sketches from the Closet: The Drawing for the Back Cover, 1974 (2: 177, 178).
