Description

Malcolm X on the coming of Armageddon—"I don't know when it's supposed to be. But I know the time is so near, the white man is finished. God doesn't come until the end of the white man's time."

Page 18 from the original typescript of Alex Haley’s 1963 interview of Malcolm X for Playboy magazine, one page, 8.5 x 11, signed "Malcolm X" in the bottom margin (with a marginal line indicating his approval of the contents). In full: [Malcolm X] and Mr. Muhammad's the only one who has a thorough knowledge of both God and the devil and Armageddon.

[Haley] But can't you say — haven't you heard your leader at least mention what's supposed to happen to white men then?

[Malcolm X] The white man himself refers to Armageddon. After then there won't be any more war because there won't be any more war-mongers. Many white statesmen refer to the third World War as Armageddon.

[Haley] When is it supposed to be, can you say that?

[Malcolm X] I don't know when it's supposed to be. But I know the time is so near, the white man is finished. God doesn't come until the end of the white man's time.

[Haley] Mr. Malcolm, let's get to the crux of your movement, or your religion. Not to mince words. Your teaching of hatred. Race hatred.

[Malcolm X] I was wondering how long it would take you to get to that. It's the first thing the white man —

[Haley] But just a moment, Mr. Malcolm. You claim to be Muslims, your version of the Moslem religion. But what can be your defense that your version is obviously based on hatred, predicated on hatred? How can you reconcile a negative separationist perspective such as you exhibit with true Moslemism which holds that all living things are sacred, equal and part of the divine scheme?

[Malcolm X] Sir, I was going to say that as soon as the white man hears a black man say he's through loving white people, then…” In very fine condition. Encapsulated and graded by PSA/DNA as “NM - MT 8.”

Playboy's May 1963 interview with Malcolm X was one of the most famous of Haley’s career and gave most readers their first in-depth look at Malcolm X’s teachings and personality. Supporters and critics viewed the Muslim minister in very different terms. Admirers saw him as a courageous advocate for the rights of African-Americans and condemned crimes against black Americans; detractors accused him of preaching racism, black supremacy, and violence. Nevertheless, he has been described as one of the greatest and most influential African-American leaders in history. Within a year of granting this interview, with America still gripped by ever-growing racial tension, the once-combative black nationalist Malcolm X had repudiated almost every stance in the interview. He had broken with the Nation of Islam movement, fallen out with its leader, Elijah Muhammad, renounced black supremacy, and embraced racial equality and human rights. He was assassinated in Harlem in 1965.
