Description

Versatile American illustrator (1926-2013) whose work appeared in advertisements and MAD Magazine. The label of the Cutty Sark bottle is his creation. Original artwork by MAD Magazine illustrator Bob Clarke for the 1981 paperback book, Get Stuffed with MAD by Frank Jacobs and Bob Clarke, comprised of his original artwork for the seven-panel comic strip, “The Dieter’s ‘IF,’ as by Rudyard Kipling,” the fourth comic of the chapter, “If Great Poets Wrote About Food.” The comic strip is accomplished in colored pencil, ink, and felt tip on four panels ranging in size from 7 x 11 to 14 x 11, with the pages accordingly numbered as they appear in the book, a copy of which is included. The comic strip depicts a very disciplined man on a diet who, after resisting six tasty food items, is revealed to be a wind-up machine pictured next to the Star Wars character R2-D2. Affixed caption text to the last panel reads: “If you’ve the will for sticking with this diet, And somehow all these yummy things avoid, Don’t tell me that you’re a human – I won’t buy it; ‘Cause, man, you gotta be some kind of droid.” In fine condition.
