Description

Collection of 27 TLSs from Oscar-winning actress Olivia de Havilland, dated between 1974 and 1996, spanning over two decades of correspondence with the recipient, Richard H. Dodd. The letters, each one page, 5.75 x 8 to 8.25 x 11.75, contain pleasantries like ‘thank you’ messages, holiday wishes, updates on her life and career, and memories of her past movies. Samples include:

May 18, 1974: “The four photos which you sent me for my signature are now on their way to you, duly autographed. It was especially moving for me to see the three pictures which were of Errol Flynn and me together, in ROBIN HOOD, DODGE CITY, and at the Los Angeles Railroad Station.”

February 8, 1974: “Thank you for your kind note written last autumn. It delighted me to learn that you were present at the John Player lecture at the National Film Theatre in 1971, and that you particularly liked my references to Errol Flynn. Like you, I am so pleased that his charm and magnetism are proving eternal, through the constant and, if anything, growing appreciation which audiences show toward his films.”

April 7, 1976: “You were thoughtful to repeat your earlier suggestion that I might like to have your duplicate copy of Errol Flynn’s novel, SHOWDOWN. Yes, indeed, it would be interesting to read this work, and I appreciate your offer in its regard.”

March 13, 1977: “As to my recent activities, I have completed three T.V. Specials: AND THE WINNER IS, aired by ABC February 13; The CBS AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE SALUTE TO BETTE DAVIS, to be broadcast March 21; and NBC’s THE TOP TWELVE slated for a May 1st showing. These and previous appointments for the forthcoming opening of AIRPORT ’77 have made the past months exceptionally busy.”

January 25, 1982: “As to films, always of interest to you: on January 2nd, CBS aired MURDER IS EASY, the Agatha Christie movie I made in England last summer. If it should come to Great Britain, I hope you will find it diverting.” In overall fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelopes.
