Description

German-American painter (1830-1902), best known for his large landscapes of the American West during the 19th century. Two items signed by Albert Bierstadt: an ALS, one page, 4.75 x 7.25, personal monogram ‘honeybee’ stationery, January 22, 1886, handwritten letter addressed from New York to “Stedman,” ostensibly the author Edmund Clarence Stedman, “It is a great honor to be classed among your friends in the manner proposed by your letter of the 16th. I take pleasure in sending you the best photograph I have”; and an original sketch by Bierstadt of a classic swashbuckling figure clad in antique, courtier-like garb, with a plumed hat and leaning on his sword, accomplished in ink on an off-white 5 x 7.75 sheet, signed in the lower left corner with his initials, "A.B." The "photograph" mentioned in the letter may in fact have been the present drawing. In overall fine condition, with a horizontal fold to the sketch.
